Central Oregon Community College has established an Emergency Notification System (ENS) that enables the College to communicate with students, faculty and staff quickly in the event of an emergency.
All faculty, staff employed at least half time and all current credit students have automatically been placed into the system. Irregular wage staff have the option to “opt in” to the system.
For those with a text capable number registered with ENS, a welcome/confirmation message will be sent within 24 hours. More details below.
When used, COCC's ENS system will send messages to your e-mail account and the phones registered to you. The e-mail will say it is coming from Emergency@COCC.edu; phone messages will come from “COCC Emergency Alert” at phone number 541 383-7777.
When will COCC's ENS system be used?
A COCC Emergency Notification will be sent only to communicate information of an imminent nature, such as a school closing for snow emergency or power outage, or other significant events such as fire, threat of violence, chemical hazard, etc.
In these cases, the COCC ENS will send e-mail messages to faculty, staff and student COCC e-mail addresses and voice recordings to registered phone numbers. The ENS can also send a text message to a user's cell phone.
What phone numbers will be used for me?
To support this new ENS system, two new types of phone numbers have been added to the COCC Student and Staff Online system (see "Reviewing and updating" below). You must have at least one of these phone numbers to receive telephone notifications, even if the numbers duplicate ones currently in the system.
The two new phone number types are called “Emergency Voice Message Number” and “Emergency Text Message Number.” If you wish to receive emergency notifications by voice message on either a landline or cell phone, you must have an “Emergency Voice Message Number” (up to 2). If, instead of or in addition to voice messages, you wish to be notified by text message, you must have an “Emergency Text Message Number.” If your cell phone carrier or your plan has a charge for incoming text messages, there will be a charge for receiving the ENS message.
Both types of emergency notification numbers have been pre-populated as much as possible for both students and staff, but the pre-populated numbers are “best guesses” based upon your existing phone numbers. All users should review the emergency choices and make any necessary changes.
What e-mail address will be used for me?
COCC students and staff registered with ENS will always receive ENS e-mail messages at their COCC-provided email addresses (efudd@cocc.edu, etc.). Users may wish, in addition, to receive such notifications at a non-COCC email address. To allow for this additional notification, a new email address type, “Non-COCC Emergency Email Address,” has been created where users can enter an off-campus email address. This field has also been pre-populated where possible, but it should be checked for accuracy.
Reviewing and updating your information/Opt In/Opt Out
To see the phone number(s) and e-mail address(s) currently programmed, to make any changes, to Opt In to the system if you are not currently covered or to Opt Out if you do not want to receive messages:
- Log in to COCC’s Student and Staff Online Services system. (My Login)
- Once logged in, click on the “Personal Information” link.
- Then click on the “COCC Emergency Notification System (ENS)” link.
- Read and follow the instructions included there to view your current information and make any desired changes.
- Changes will not be applied to your COCC ENS contact information for 24 hours.

What should I do in the case of an emergency?
In the event of a real emergency at COCC, you will be receive instructions through the ENS system. You will also be advised to visit the COCC Emergency Web page at: http://www.cocc.edu/emergency/, or to call the ENS Emergency phone number at 383-7777 for updates on the status of the emergency situation.
