RECOGNIZING VETERANS
 Beginning a new tradition this year, COCC will recognize graduating veterans by providing them a special red, white, and blue cord for the commencement ceremony. Veterans may pick up their cord at the mandatory ceremony rehearsal on June 14th.  

  

 COMPUTER DROP-IN LAB RESOURCES
Two drop-in computer labs are located on the Bend Campus: in Pioneer Hall and the Barber Library.  A drop-in computer lab is also available on the Redmond Campus in Building 3.  Lab attendants are available to help find information and updates on your COCC technology accounts, lab hours and printing in a computer lab.

 

 KNOW SOMEONE INTERESTED IN ATTENDING COCC?
If you know someone who is interested in attending COCC, encourage them to attend one of COCC's Getting Started sessions. The sessions are offered at all four campuses.

FALL TERM REGISTRATION BEGINS SOON!
Are you ready? Find out for sure by logging on to your Bobcat web account. Click on “Registration” and then the “Can I Register for Credit Classes?” link. This page will let you know if you have any holds (such as an advising requirement or an unpaid parking ticket) and the day and time you can begin registration.

Fall term registration begins the week of May 20-24. Students should meet with their academic advisors as soon as possible to prepare for registration. Be aware that faculty advisors have limited availability during finals week (June 10-14). Info: CAP Center: 541-383-7200.

Summer term registration continues. The term will begin June 24.

GRADUATION
If you plan to complete your certificate/degree spring or summer term AND participate in commencement, submit an Application for Certificate/Degree now! 

Commencement Program
Deadline Extended!!  If you want your name printed in the commencement program and in local newspapers, submit the Application for Certificate/Degree form AND complete the RSVP form on your Bobcat Web account. 

COMMENCEMENT: JUNE 15 AND MANDATORY REHEARSAL JUNE 14
For more information and to participate in COCC's Commencement, please complete the RSVP form on your Bobcat Web account now!  Graduation regalia and announcements are available at the Bookstore.  See the Bookstore's website for more information.

 

FINANCIAL AID NEWS
Financial Aid for 2013-14

Students may now apply or renew their FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) for the 2013-14 award year (the new award year starts Summer term 2013). Students are encouraged to apply or renew online. To electronically sign the FAFSA, a PIN number will be required. Students may "apply for a Pin" or "Request a Duplicate PIN" online with the Department of Education.

Spring FAFSA Workshops
This is your opportunity to get assistance completing your 2013-14 FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid).   Join us at one of the following workshops and a financial aid staff member will be available to help you complete your FAFSA online.

Summer-Term Priority Deadline
For students attending summer term, Financial Aid will give priority consideration to those students completing their requirements by June 1.  
 
Apply for a COCC Foundation Scholarship
The College's Foundation offers more than 250 awards totaling more than $750,000 for COCC students. The COCC Foundation Scholarship application is available through your Bobcat Web Account. The application deadline is July 15, 2013.

Bridging Cultures: Muslim Journeys Series
This series kicks off from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., Wed., May 1, Wille Hall, Campus Center, COCC Bend Campus. “Muslim Journeys and the Making of American History” by Dr. Kambiz Ghanea Bassiri of Reed College. Free and open to the public. Info: 541-383-7295

Racism with a Smile: Racism in Contemporary Society
Discussion facilitated by Tom Barry, Sociology, from noon to 1 p.m on Thursday, May 2, in the Multicultural Center 217, COCC Campus Center. Starting in the 1960s, racism in the United States became less overt or direct as we transitioned to a “color-blind” society. In this session we will discuss how ideas about color-blindness work to perpetuate racial inequality. Free and open to the public. Info: 541-383-7412

Central Oregon Symphony Presents Spring Concerts
7:30 p.m. on May 4 and May 6; 2 p.m. on May 5 at the Bend High School Auditorium. Concerts are free; seating is limited. The concerts feature winners from the 2012 Young Artist Competition. Complimentary tickets available at www.cosymphony.com. Info: 541- 317-3941

Cinco de Mayo Celebration

“Girl Rising” Film and Discussion
Discussion facilitated by Amy Harper, Anthropology, COCC, and Beth Daniels, Psychology, OSU-Cascades from 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 7, Room 248 OSU-Cascades, Cascades Hall, COCC Bend Campus. The groundbreaking film tells the stories of nine extraordinary girls from nine countries who illustrate the strength of the human spirit and the power of education to change the world. Legends of Mexico

Annual Student Art Exhibit Slated
Artwork by students enrolled in COCC credit art classes this year. The opening reception and awards ceremony will be held 4:30 to 6 p.m. on May 9. The exhibit continues through June 5 in the The Gallery in the Pinckney Center, COCC, 1 to 4 p.m., Wed. to Sat.. Info: 541-383-7511

Behold the Power of Play!
10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, May 10 in Ochoco Hall, Room 204, COCC Bend Campus. Amy Howell, Early Childhood Education, will give an interactive presentation exploring the power of play and consider why play is critical to young children's learning and development. Info: 541-330-4357

Asian Pacific Islander Festival
1 - 4 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at the Campus Center, COCC Bend Campus. Attendees can experience a variety of cultural traditions, artists and cuisines from the cultures around the Pacific Rim. Free and open to the community. Info: 541-383-7256

‘The New Jim Crow’ and Oregon’s School-to-Prison Pipeline: Continuing the Conversation
Discussion facilitated by Jim Foster, Political Science, OSU-Cascades from noon – 1 p.m., Monday, May 13, OSU-Cascades, Cascades Hall Room 246, COCC Bend Campus. In 2010, law professor Michelle Alexander published a compelling critique of the latest system of racial social control in America, “The New Jim Crow.” Now comes a scathing report from the Oregon ACLU, “Oregon’s Schools-to-Prison Pipeline,” showing that students of color are subjected to harsher discipline than their white peers. Annual Chemistry Poster Session

Cascade Chorale to Perform

Warrior Challenge II and Fun Run
3 pm, Friday, May 31 until completed on the COCC track. The Warrior Challenge II is a 5K obstacle course with 9 obstacles and a slip-n-slide finish.  The challenge is sponsored by the OSU/COCC Military Science Club. News from Oregon State University-Cascades
Apply Now to OSU-Cascades for Fall Term
Plan for fall term now, before your summer kicks into full gear.  OSU-Cascades is taking applications now for Fall 2013. Visit us in Cascades Hall every Tuesday from noon to 1:00 p.m. to learn how to transfer, or call us at 541-322-3100 or cascadesadmit@osucascades.edu.

Weekly Canoe Wednesdays
1:30-4 pm every Wednesday through June 5 at the Riverbend Park by the dog park and the Parks and Rec building in the Old Mill District. Free and open to all current OSU-Cascades and COCC staff and students as well as alumni, regardless of experience or ability level. Head toward the OSU van to grab a canoe and a PFD. If you don't see anyone, we are already on the water, but we'll be checking back by the van every half hour or hour or so for additional participants.
