Understanding medical billing procedures for physician and outpatient services is an excellent skill set to develop if your goal is to work in an administrative position in the health care industry. This course is designed for those wishing to enter the health care field or who already work in health care who wish to expand their current function. Due to the diversity of stakeholders involved, maintaining a healthy cash-flow in a health care facility is challenging. The health care practitioner, facility, patient, and third-party payer all have distinct needs and perspectives that must be considered. The range of topics covered in this course includes:
Standard forms used by offices and insurance companies Introduction to coding for reimbursement Introduction to CPT/HCPCS and ICD-9 terminology and coding process Compliant billing practices How fees and insurance reimbursements are calculated Allocating payments How to appeal when errors occur in reimbursement Preparing patient statements Collection processes Maintaining accounts receivable Medical legal issues
The objective of this noncredit course is to provide a foundational knowledge of medical billing procedures. It is not intended to prepare for professional certifications. See COCC's Health Information Technology Program for information on becoming certified.
